This type of body art is older than 5,000 years. Worldwide headlines were made in 1991 when the body of the famous 'ice man' was discovered on a frozen European mountain. His body was 5,000 years old and is still considered to be the best preserved human body ever found. His skin bore the markings of 57 tattoos.
The sleeve type tattoo is very popular in modern times. This comprises of a large themed tattoo, or a cluster of smaller ones. It covers the entire arm, right from the shoulder down to the wrist. If this is done on the leg, it is also known as a sleeve. The main object of a tattoo, besides the fashion statement, is to say something individualistic about the person. Hence, the design usually reflects the person's character.
You can also have a half-sleeve or a quarter-sleeve tattoo. As the name implies, the half-sleeve will cover half your arm to the elbow. The quarter-sleeve will start at the shoulder and end half way down your upper arm. The design of a sleeve tattoo is generally a collaboration between the tattooist and the client.
Some designs are very attractive. In fact, you can call them masterpieces. These are done with meticulous detail and can include animals, flowers, religious icons, or family crests. However, those that offend people are horrible tattoos. These often include racialist slogans and graphics, profanities, anti-religious statements, repulsive drawings of people, and distasteful images of death, skulls and even cannibalism.
Luckily, people can have their distasteful tattoos removed. If someone is going for an important job interview, a ghastly tattoo is going to be a turn-off. Then there are people with ugly tattoos related to a gang. If they are no longer a member of that gang, obviously the tattoo will have to go. Similarly, those who wear tattoos symbolizing hate or prejudice may eventually realize that their derogatory tattoos are unacceptable.
Horrible tattoos can be removed by laser technology. If the therapist is an expert, he or she can do the procedure with minimal scarring, or eliminate scarring altogether. The process is far from pleasant. It is very painful and it can also be financially painful. The procedure is very costly.
